SUS304 which is widely used and known as 18Cr-8Ni is an Austenite stainless steel. Austenite stainless steel is made of austenite structure which is hardened by cold working but not by heat treatment. Good at workability and corrosion resistance. It is widely used for spring material due to its remarkable characteristics of work hardening. It is normally nonmagnetic, but sometimes gets feebly magnetic by high stress.
Heat treatment provides it with excellent mechanical properties such as high strength and high hardness.
Annealing austenite makes ferrite structure and quenching austenite makes martensite structure and increases its hardness.
It is magnetic at normal temperature and is less corrosion resistant than other stainless steel due to high carbon content.
It contains more than 16% of Chrome and forms stable ferrite structure. It is not hardened by heat treatment, but is hardened a little by cold working.
Suitable for forming, but gets embrittle by quenching from high temperature.
It is ferromagnetic.
Very high hardness by precipitation hardening. Corrosion resistance is a little lower than austenitic stainless steel and it is ferromagnetic.
